Q: Will a Life Coach tell me what to do?
A:
A great Life Coach doesn't simply tell you what to do... that may be tricky for you to understand initially...but think about it for a
moment. You have more information about your life than anyone else and so if only you could access and use this to maximum effect, YOU would be able to make the best possible choices for YOU.
Having said that a Life coach may offer guidance and suggestions if they feel it necessary and with the client's permission.

Q: What Life Coaching Isn't
A: See answers below...
Q: What's the difference between a Life Coach and a Mentor?
A:
If I were to share expert knowledge with you so you can emulate and improve your skills in a specific area or task, then this would be mentoring.
A mentor would normally have a proven track record at doing this skill or task. So the language would be "I can break down the steps and show you how to do it 'My Way', that worked for me."
If you want to understand this better, take a look at a seminal Coaching book by Timothy Galway called 'The Inner Game of Tennis'.
Mentoring is often used hand in hand with Life Coaching but on it's own does not allow for someone's full potential to come out as their own abilities, styles, and experiences are not concentrated on.
This will happen when you work with me as your Life Coach.
Q: How does Life Coaching fit with other related therapies?
A:
Without information to the contrary Life Coaching assumes there are no significant issues stopping you moving forward in your life.
It is possible that issues may be uncovered with a Life Coach and at such a time discussion may result relating to the use of Therapy work outside of the Life Coaching.
Imagine a Life coach helping to create a map of your life and helping you move forward toward your goals. The Life Coach can help you to avoid bumps in the road but it is not therapy and does not focus on issues.
Q: How is a Life Coach different from a Counsellor?
A:
Here people are helped through past-based issues or conflicts by the counsellor listening to and giving feedback.
This differs significantly to working with a Life Coach as Counselling is issue-based not goal-focussed.
Q: How is a Life Coach different to a Psychotherapist?
A:
This is where a set of techniques are used to cure or improve psychological and behavioural problems. This treatment of mental and emotional disorders is designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insight into problems,
with the goal being the relief of symptoms or changes in behaviour leading to improved social and vocational functioning, and personality growth.

Q: So why is Goal-setting so important in working with a Life Coach?
A: The Magic of Goal Setting
Magic is a perfect word because when something goes from the mind to being written down an amazing thing happens.
It becomes more real, as if you have for the first time poured water onto the seed of your dreams. A good Life Coach realises the power of taking things from mind to paper.
I would go further and say the actual effect of writing (not typing) but forming letters and words is in itself powerful together with the experience of seeing things written down
often for the first time that may have spent years simply in our head.
How often do ideas and thoughts go around and round in your head, sometimes for years, without you ever doing anything about them, even though you may dearly want to?
Imagine how liberating it may feel to set into motion a process of ordering and breaking down these thoughts into detail to explore bringing them fully to life. This process is one
part of Life Coaching.
AMAZING BUT TRUE -
It's now a well documented fact that in the 1970's a study of Harvard graduates was done.
It was found that only 3% of the graduates wrote down their goals regularly. 20 years later the same Harvard graduates were surveyed and it was found that these 3% were worth more than the entire remaining 97%.
That's powerful food for thought.........and goal-setting is just one of many tools used in my 'Life Coach' tool kit!
